Emirates ID:
The Emirates ID is necessary for most official processes in the UAE. When purchasing a used car, both the buyer and seller should present their valid Emirates IDs. This document confirms the identity and residency status of the buyer and links the vehicle registration to the correct person.
Driving license:
A valid UAE driving license is compulsory to complete the car purchase and register the vehicle. It should match the category of the car being bought. Without this, registering the car or applying for insurance may not be possible.
Vehicle registration card (Mulkiya):
The seller must provide the current vehicle registration card, also known as the Mulkiya. This document shows the car’s registration status, chassis number, engine number, and ownership details. It should be checked for any pending fines or black points before the sale.
Insurance documents:
Car insurance is mandatory in Dubai for registration. If the car already has valid insurance, the policy may sometimes be transferred to the new owner, depending on the insurer’s rules. Otherwise, the buyer will want to arrange new insurance before transferring ownership.
RTA test certificate:
Used cars over three years old must pass a test from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) before a sale. This test checks the vehicle’s condition and safety. The certificate, valid for 30 days, should be submitted during registration. It confirms that the car has passed inspection and is ready for the road.
Sales agreement:
The sales agreement, often completed at the RTA center or authorized dealer, includes the car’s details, buyer and seller information, and the price. This document must be signed by both parties. Once it’s done, the car ownership can be transferred.
